University's public lecture explores how cancer treatment can be personalised

University of Brighton's public lecture in November shares insights into how computer simulations can predict the best cancer treatment for each individual.

Can cancer be predicted? Can treatment be personalised? If no two people and no two cancers are the same, why would one approach work for all? The first inaugural lecture for this academic year aims to shed light on the impact of computer simulations on the predictions for and treatment of the disease.

Join Simon Mitchell, Professor of Cancer Systems Biology at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and co-director of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre, on Thursday 19 November when he reveals how virtual tumours can help find the right treatment for each cancer.

Drawing on extensive research, Professor Mitchell will explain how computer simulation can predict how cancer is likely to progress and which treatment might work best for each person. Using the same combination of maths and computing used to predict the weather and the stock market, he will demonstrate how computer simulation is paving the way for a new era of personalised medicine.

Delivered by newly appointed professors, inaugural lectures delve into the pioneering research Brighton academics are carrying out to improve understanding of diverse subjects and address challenges facing people and communities in Brighton, across the UK and around the world. Lectures also give insights into how academics become experts in their chosen field.

The lectures are free to attend, and open to staff, students and the general public - but booking is essential. A reception follows each lecture where conversations can continue informally with people from across the university and the wider community.
