WASHINGTON, D.C.- On January 27, 2026, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02)co-sponsored two bills to address New Mexico's housing affordability crisis by cracking down on greedy, corporate landlords to ensure hardworking New Mexicans have a fair shot at homeownership.
"Owning or renting a home is out of reach for more and more New Mexicans each day, as private equity and multi-millionaire investors buy up our housing stock and raise the prices," said Rep. Vasquez. "That's why I support serious and bipartisan bills to ensure single family homes stay within the reach of everyday workers and families."
Rep. Vasquez co-sponsored the Bipartisan Families First Housing Act, which gives families, nonprofits, local governments, and community land trusts the first opportunity to purchase federally-connected single-family homes before institutional investors can swoop in. The bill creates a standardized 180-day "first look" period and establishes an online public clearinghouse for eligible properties, increasing transparency and helping families achieve homeownership.
He also co-sponsored the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act, which limits the ability of large investor-owned entities to benefit from tax breaks reserved for individual homeowners, prohibits them from purchasing or securitizing mortgages on single-family homes, and directs revenues from new transfer taxes to fund the Housing Trust Fund to support affordable housing construction and preservation.
These bills align with the President's recent Executive Order, "Stopping Wall Street from Competing with Main Street Homebuyers," which directs federal agencies to prevent institutional investors from monopolizing the single-family home market. Rep. Vasquez praises this executive order as a step in the right direction for housing affordability and continues to champion his solutions to ensure all New Mexican home owners and renters - including those living in mobile homes - are protected from predatory price gouging. Mobile homes account for one in six homes in New Mexico.
