WATCH: Sen. Schiff Message on Beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month

"Latinos have always fought for California, and I, as a Senator, will always fight for the Latino community."

Washington, D.C. - Ahead of the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released a video yesterday honoring the critical contributions of the Latino community to California and the United States of America.

So tomorrow marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month.

It's a month to celebrate the incredible contributions of the Latino community, for me in California, but all around the country.

Contributions in the arts, in science, in medicine, in the law, in every field of endeavor, in the business world.

In fact, small businesses, Latino small businesses are the fastest growing segment of our economy.

The Latino community has done so much - puts food on our table, improves the quality of life for all of us, and I just want to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of the Latino community in California and elsewhere.

Nevertheless, hugely challenging time for the Latino community.

Prices continue to rise, prices of homes rising, prices of food rising, and when those prices rise, they hit the Latino community harder than practically any other.

And it's not just the cost of things that is putting a squeeze on Latino communities, it's also the tariffs and their impact on Latino businesses, but even more so, it is this draconian immigration policy and enforcement by the Trump administration, upheld by this Supreme Court.

The fact that people are being grabbed off the street based on their ethnicity or the language they speak or where they work, grabbed indiscriminately citizens and noncitizens alike, is just appalling.

And it is flatly unconstitutional, and the fact that this Supreme Court would allow it even for a minute, is just shameful.

I want to acknowledge that pain and that hurt.

I'm going to continue fighting against it, but I want to acknowledge, more than anything else, this month the extraordinary contributions the Latino community has made to California and the country.

The Latino community has always fought for California, and I, as a Senator, will always fight for the Latino community.

Mañana comienza el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

Es un mes para celebrar las contribuciones increíbles de la comunidad latina, para nosotros en California y en todo el país: contribuciones en las artes, la ciencia, la medicina, y el derecho, en todos los ámbitos y el mundo empresarial.

De hecho, las pequeñas empresas latinas son el segmento de más rápido crecimiento de nuestra economía.

La comunidad latina ha hecho tanto por nosotros, desde poner comida en nuestras mesas, mejorar la calidad de vida de todos nosotros, quiero reconocer las contribuciones extraordinarias de nuestra comunidad latina en California y en todo el país.

Sin embargo, este es un tiempo muy difícil para latinos. Los precios siguen subiendo, tanto en vivienda como en los alimentos.

Y cuando esos precios suben, afectan más fuerte a la comunidad latina que a casi cualquier otra comunidad.

Y no son solo los precios que están impactando a los latinos, si no también los aranceles que están afectando a los negocios latinos.

Pero aún más impactante son las políticas de inmigración severas de la administración del Presidente Trump, respaldadas por la Corte Suprema.

El hecho que están deteniendo en base de su etnicidad, o el idioma que hablan, o por dónde trabajan, detenidos indiscriminadamente, ciudadanos y no ciudadanos por igual, es simplemente terrible.

Y es indignante e inconstitucional y el hecho de que la Corte Suprema lo permita, aunque sea por un minuto, es vergonzoso.

Quiero reconocer ese dolor. Voy a seguir luchando contra esto. Pero quiero sobre todo en este mes reconocer las extraordinarias contribuciones que la comunidad latina ha hecho por California y por el país.

Latinos siempre han luchado por California, y yo, como senador, siempre lucharé por la comunidad latina.
