On January 6, 2026, H.E. Mr. Jia Guide, Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, met with Dr. Barham Salih, the new UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The two sides exchanged views on global refugee governance and future cooperation between China and the UNHCR.
Ambassador Jia Guide congratulated High Commissioner Salih on his election and stated that, with frequent local and cross-border conflicts worldwide and severe shortages in humanitarian funding, the ongoing refugee and displacement problems continue to deteriorate. In the face of new circumstances and challenges, the Global Governance Initiative, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, holds significant practical guidance for improving global refugee governance. China stands ready to further strengthen communication and collaboration with the UNHCR, promoting the addressing of both symptoms and root causes, and injecting more positive energy into tackling global refugee challenges.
High Commissioner Salih pointed out that China is a key pillar in the international community and an important partner of the UNHCR. He looks forward to deepening cooperation with China to alleviate regional humanitarian crises and seek durable solutions for refugee issue.
