Deeply Saddened by Passing of Majesty King Harald V, Secretary-General Applauds Norwegian Monarch’s Commitment to Children’s Welfare, Environmental Issues

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway on 28 August.

He will be remembered for his engagement for children's welfare and environmental issues, his support for diversity and calls for generosity.

Throughout his reign, King Harald embodied Norway's deep commitment to international solidarity and cooperation that is also reflected in his country's steadfast partnership with the United Nations and its enduring commitment to peace and multilateralism.

The Secretary-General conveys his deepest condolences to His Majesty King Haakon VIII, as well as to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Norway.
