Preliminary information indicates the rider, Jason A. Doherty, 60, of Newberg, Oregon, driving a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle with sidecar, was southbound on I-5. After he negotiated a left turn off the Marquam Bridge, for an unknown reason, the motorcycle suddenly veered at a sharp angle, out of the lane of travel, and struck the jersey barrier. A Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crew happened to be passing by and stopped to assist and attempt lifesaving care. Portland Fire & Rescue responded and also underwent lifesaving measures before determining the rider was deceased. The rider wore a helmet, however it was a half-shell novelty helmet and not DOT approved.

Mr. Doherty's family was notified of his death.
