Rep. Gillen Statement on DHS Shutdown

GARDEN CITY, NY - Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement regarding the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):

"After the horrific killings of American citizens by federal agents, it is clear that Congress must exert its power over DHS and rein in this unchecked agency. Other law enforcement agencies are expected to operate within the bounds of the law to prevent the abuse of power, and ICE must be held to those same standards.

"I'm urging Republicans and the White House to negotiate in good faith to come to a bipartisan agreement to end the shutdown of DHS and pass meaningful reforms for ICE. I have in the past and will again oppose any funding that does not include guardrails for ICE enforcement and enact greater accountability measures."
