Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following statement following the U.S. Senate's passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act:
"This week, the Senate passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, the largest housing bill in over 30 years. This will help boost the housing supply across the nation and crack down on private equity firms buying up single-family homes, so that we can begin to bring down housing costs for families. I was proud to join Senator Elizabeth Warren and fight to get this bill to the finish line."
Background:
Senator Schiff has been a champion pushing for solutions to tackle the housing crisis in America.
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act also includes provisions which Senator Schiff has pushed for to authorize the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program to get housing-related disaster assistance to communities recovering from natural disasters - this funding will be essential to families rebuilding following last year's devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Last year, Schiff unveiled landmark legislation, the Housing BOOM Act (Building Occupancy Opportunities for Millions) Act, to spur a new boom in housing construction across the United States and help address the root causes of the housing affordability crisis, including the lack of supply, rising rents, and increasingly out of reach pathways to homeownership for Americans. The Housing BOOM Act would dramatically expand housing construction through a raft of new measures aimed at rapidly boosting construction of both affordable and middle-income housing.
Earlier this month, the United States Conference of Mayors voted to endorse multiple housing bills written by Senator Schiff including the Housing BOOM Act and his bipartisan, FIREWALL Act, legislation to lower disaster risks posed to homes. The endorsements were backed by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, who was recently elected as the bipartisan group's President.
