Maimonides Health Holds First Annual Primary Care Symposium on National Internal Medicine Day

Event brings key subspecialty educational topics to primary care providers, helping them evaluate and treat patients with the latest guidelines across cardiology, infectious disease, cancer screening, and more

Brooklyn, NY, October 30, 2026 - Maimonides Health held its inaugural Primary Care Symposium on October 28, a new event organized by Maimonides' Department of Medicine to enhance continuing medical education surrounding primary and preventive care topics. More than 175 physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other clinical professionals and members of the public attended the free symposium, held with both in-person and virtual attendance options.

The symposium ran under the theme of "Primary Care Changes and Challenges in the Outpatient Environment," featuring Maimonides physicians across key specialties that frequently partner with primary care providers in patient care. Topics included vaccine updates, diagnosing and treating community-acquired pneumonia, AI in clinical care, dermatology emergencies, updates to cholesterol risk assessment guidelines, modern hypertension treatments, cancer screening, evaluating abnormal masses, technology updates for diabetes management, oncologic genomic profiling, and evaluating and treating eosinophilic esophagitis.

This year's event coincides with National Internal Medicine Day, a day of recognition established by the American College of Physicians (ACP) that "recognizes internal medicine specialists and subspecialists who are united by a commitment to excellence and make a difference in the lives of their patients every day."

"Accessible, highly informed primary care providers are essential to achieving positive healthcare outcomes in any community," says Matthew A. Weissman, MD, Chair of Medicine, Maimonides Health, and himself a primary care physician . "On a patient-provider level, the role of the primary care physician is a crucial one, helping patients address chronic disease early on, avoid hospitalization, and live longer, healthier lives. At the public health level, a strong primary care network translates to more equitable, high-quality care, cost savings, and less strain on emergency services. With this new symposium, we're creating an annual resource for physicians and other primary care providers from our own health system and beyond to come together to share their unique expertise, learn about evolving specialty care topics, and find support for the critical work we do."

"Primary care, although the foundation of any health care system, is a vastly underutilized and under-resourcedspecialty, here in our home city and across the country. Through the good times, the difficult times and everything in between, we are there to provide guidance, support and empathy - every step of the way," said Jeffrey Basti, MD, Chief of Primary Care and Vice Chair of Medicine, Maimonides Health . "This event supports those clinicians who share our dedication to offering the highest quality primary services to patients in Brooklyn and around the city. Bringing new perspectives from specialists across critical disciplines, like cardiology, infectious disease, oncology, and more helps primary care providers focus their efforts around prevention, detection, and treatments that work for their patients. We'rethrilled to have welcomed so many providers to learn with us and look forward to continuing the event next year."

The symposium follows a year of significant expansions by Maimonides prioritizing accessible primary and preventive care across neighborhoods in Central and Southern Brooklyn. Maimonides Doctors Clinton Hill Pavilion opened at 547 Vanderbilt Ave. in fall 2025 to bring adult and pediatric primary care, women's health care, and multispecialty surgical and medical experts to patients in Clinton Hill and surrounding neighborhoods. Maimonides Doctors Nostrand Avenue expanded capacity of the existing primary care practice at 2316 Nostrand Ave., and added on-site specialty care from Maimonides physicians. Maimonides Adult and Pediatric Care-7th Avenue , located at 6323 7 th Ave., opened this fall, uniting our trusted pediatric and adult primary care with Maimonides' first women's health hub and additional specialty services in one convenient location. At Maimonides Doctors Pavilion at 4813 9 th Ave, Maimonides has also expanded the number of primary care providers seeing patients, in addition to expanding primary care provider availability to evening hours, to better fit the needs of patients.
