(Walnut Creek, CA) - John Muir Health's Multi-Disciplinary Breast Cancer Program has reached a significant milestone, serving more than 2,000 patients in the community.

The program offers patients a unique, streamlined experience: the opportunity to meet with a breast surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist all in a single day. Together, these specialists collaborate to create a personalized treatment plan, ensuring that every patient's options are fully explored.

For patients and their families, this coordinated approach helps reduce the anxiety and uncertainty that often accompany a new cancer diagnosis. By combining consultations into one visit, the program shortens the time between diagnosis and treatment-allowing patients to focus their energy on healing.

"Our goal is to ensure that patients receive the best treatment for their individual needs," said Dr. Tiffany Svahn, medical oncologist and president of the John Muir Health Cancer Medical Group. "Our multi-disciplinary approach leads to better outcomes, improved quality of life, and higher survival rates for women and men with breast cancer."

On average, patients are seen within seven days of referral and begin treatment within a month of their consultation. Throughout this process, John Muir Health's nurse navigators and patient navigators provide seamless support, helping patients move confidently through each step of their care journey.

Patient Perspective
In 2023, Lynn Zampa learned she had breast cancer following a routine mammogram. "I didn't understand the online test results, but I understood the word 'malignant,'" she recalled. "I was in a mental fog - shock, surprise, disbelief. But someone from John Muir called almost immediately, and we started setting up appointments."

From her first meeting with Dr. Svahn (medical oncologist), Dr. Eigelberger (surgeon), and Dr. Rahman (radiation oncologist), Lynn said she felt reassured. "They laid it out very clearly - start with chemo, then lumpectomy, then radiation. I felt nothing but optimism."

Now cancer-free, Lynn reflects on her experience with gratitude. "Having everything in that one building (Behring Pavilion) was hugely helpful. I'm no longer afraid of cancer. The calm reassurance from everyone we had dealings with was life-changing."
