Last Monday (10 August 2026), an earthquake struck Colombia. According to current estimates, the 7.4-magnitude quake killed at least 265 people, injured around 3,500 and left many more missing.

More than 80 buildings were completely destroyed, whilst numerous other buildings and homes were severely damaged. The cities of Pereira and Manizales were particularly hard hit; in Cali, too, at least 20 buildings collapsed.

Close partnership with Colombia

In the earthquake-affected region of Cali, the University of Würzburg has maintained close partnerships with three higher education institutions for many years: the Universidad del Valle, Cali; ICESCI, Cali, and the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. As a result, the region has developed into a hub for JMU's exchanges with South America since 2011.

Through the exchange programme with these partner universities, students from the University of Würzburg have also regularly had the opportunity to take part in an exchange in Colombia. The Faculty of Management and Economics, in particular, maintains good links with the region. Fortunately, there are currently no JMU students on exchange in Colombia.

Appeal for donations

In an initial response following the earthquake, representatives from Universidad Icesi have written to the International Office at JMU. In their letter, they confirm that the safety of all exchange students is assured. At the same time, they are appealing for donations to support rescue and relief efforts.

Donation accounts can be found on the websites of numerous aid organisations - a quick search using the keywords 'Colombia earthquake donation' will suffice.

It is also possible to donate money directly via Universidad Icesi. Donors should select the 'Icesi Unida por Colombia' fund ('destinación') and complete the required fields on the form.
