#AdvocacyMatters: Disability Distinction

April 17, 2026 / #AdvocacyMatters

This week's #AdvocacyMatters was written by Nathan, a Communications Intern with DRO this semester.

At Disability Rights Ohio, our job is to advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities in Ohio.

That demographic is very broad.

Because we know all disabilities and people are not the same, this means that we need to understand individual needs while advocating for more general groups.

For example, if two people are autistic, they may not require the exact same supports. Another example is in mobility. One person may need a wheelchair, while another requires braces or crutches.

Ultimately, specification is key, because support varies from person to person.
So why is it so important that we make these distinctions in getting to know the people we support?

That is because, historically, people with disabilities have been discriminated against in both subtle and unsubtle ways.

Things as big as subminimum wage or as small as just not knowing about a disability can change the course of someone's life. Our hope is to live in a world where each person can share their story and receive the specific support and encouragement they need to live a full life.

Not every individual is affected in the same way by the same law. It's our job here to see the nuance, listen intently and fight for each individual.

Please visit www.disabilityrightsohio.org/donate to support our cause and see each individual as unique and valued.
