Fall Prevention & Safe Lifting – Train the Trainer

l to r Deborah Meshel, Dominican Nursing Program Manager, Kayla Franklin, SR EMT, BC Jason Hatfield, Dewitt Miller, SR EMT, Jessie Morales, Heathcare Pathways Coordinator

Battalion Chief Jason Hatfield delivered a presentation for the Home Care Aide Program. The purpose of the program is to train entry-level caregivers to support older adults safely in their homes, with a focus on recognizing risks and promoting independence.

The presentation covered key fall-prevention concepts, including why falls remain our highest-volume call type and a major source of serious injury among older adults. We reviewed common intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors such as dizziness, medication effects, poor lighting, and household hazards.

We also discussed practical prevention strategies caregivers can implement immediately-removing tripping hazards, improving lighting, installing grab bars and handrails, and ensuring safe footwear. We emphasized the importance of assessing for hidden injuries after a fall, including head trauma or pain that may not be immediately obvious. Finally, we provided guidance on safe lifting techniques and when caregivers should call for EMS rather than attempt to move a patient themselves.

Overall, the session was well received and helped reinforce fall-prevention awareness among frontline caregivers who interact daily with at-risk older adults.
