Reich Serves as Judge When UCONN Law and Business Students Collaborate and Compete (University of Connecticut School of Law)

Law students and business students teamed up on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21, 2015, for the first UConn Law School-UConn Business School Joint Negotiation Competition. Marc Reich, President, Ironwood Capital, second from right in the first row, served as a competition judge.

February 24, 2015 - Hartford, CT - Law students and business students teamed up on Feb. 20 and 21, 2015, for the first UConn Law School-UConn Business School Joint Negotiation Competition.
Each five-member team, comprising a mix of business and law students, collaborated to prepare and negotiate a complex business transaction. Eight teams competed and two will advance to the Villanova Law School/UCLA Business School Case Competition on April 11.

The event was itself a collaboration between the two schools and between UConn Law Professor Jessica Rubin and UConn Business Professor Nora Madjar-Nanovska.

"It was terrific to facilitate collaboration between law and business students,and to share the administration of the event with Professor Madjar-Nanovska," Rubin said. "Students learned to work across disciplines, which is how business law negotiations really happen. For example, I witnessed a business student explaining financial analysis models to a law student and I overheard a law student explaining a non-competition contract to a business student."

The competition brought in business professionals, transactional lawyers and graduates and faculty from both schools to judge the entrants and provide feedback. Among them were UConn Business professors Robert Bird, Nicole Jackson and Ramesh Shankar and UConn Law professors Professors Jennifer Mailly and Jeremy McClane. Jessica Panella, Head of Access Services for the Law Library, and Linday Booth of Faculty Support Services assisted with the event.

The two teams that will advance to the Villanova Law School/UCLA Business School Case Competition are:

Team 1: Aaron Baral, Pamela Bass, Cassandra Cortese, Thomas Holmgren, Rebecca Ortinez and Jenna Montesano (alternate)

Team 2: Joshua Correia, Armond Hodge, Ryan Huntsman, Malcolm Ranger-Murdock, Bianca Slota and Andrew Ouelett (alternate)
