Virginia Great Outdoors Month

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Virginia Great Outdoors Month

WHEREAS, Virginia's lands and waters provide vital natural resources, support diverse wildlife habitats, and offer a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike; and

WHEREAS, Virginians across the Commonwealth value the outdoors for supporting physical and mental well-being, fostering connections to nature and history, and bringing family and friends together, while accessible outdoor spaces enhance quality of life and attract new residents and businesses; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is home to diverse and iconic public lands, including 44 state parks, 57 wildlife management areas, 26 state forests, and 66 natural area preserves, as well as national parks, battlefields, wildlife refuges, and numerous historic sites, all of which provide opportunities to experience the outdoors; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia offers a wide range of outdoor experiences that accommodate all enthusiasts, including walking, running, biking, camping, backpacking, hunting, fishing, hiking, paddling, horseback riding, rock climbing, and boating; and

WHEREAS, Virginia's outdoor recreation industry is a significant economic driver, contributing $14.4 billion annually and supporting more than 126,000 jobs, and is recognized in the Statewide Strategic Tourism Plan as a leading strength across all regions of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the celebration of Play All Day VA on June 21 invites residents to enjoy the many benefits of the outdoors by engaging in the longest day of play at local parks and community centers alongside their neighbors and friends; and

WHEREAS, during Great Outdoors Month and throughout the year, citizens are encouraged to explore and enjoy Virginia's diverse landscapes and outdoor experiences;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize June 2026 as GREAT OUTDOORS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
