NRC issues preliminary recommendation supporting combined license issuance for four planned AP1000 reactors in Carson County, Texas.
Fermi America has reached another significant milestone in the development of Project Matador, its advanced energy and intelligence campus in Carson County, Texas. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has published a Federal Register notice regarding the draft environmental review for four planned Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors at the site.
As part of the environmental review process, NRC staff issued a preliminary recommendation in favor of issuing the project's combined licenses, subject to successful completion of the required safety review. The development represents an important step forward in Fermi America's efforts to bring large-scale, reliable nuclear generation to Project Matador.
The milestone comes just 15 months after the company submitted its application, reflecting meaningful progress through a complex federal regulatory process. While the final environmental review, safety evaluation, and Commission decision remain ahead, the preliminary recommendation marks continued advancement toward the project's long-term nuclear energy objectives.
Nuclear generation is a key component of Project Matador's planned 17-gigawatt private energy infrastructure, which is designed to support next-generation artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Alongside natural gas, solar, and battery energy storage, nuclear power is expected to play an important role in delivering reliable, long-term energy capacity.
Fermi America recognizes the NRC review team for its thorough and focused work throughout the process, along with project partners Westinghouse Electric Company, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Preferred Licensing Services, and ENERCON. The company also acknowledges the contributions of its nuclear development team, led by Mesut Uzman, alongside Sezin Uzman, Andrew Bryant, and Dannie Weaver.
As Project Matador continues to advance, Fermi America remains focused on progressing through the remaining regulatory milestones and developing the energy infrastructure needed to power America's AI future.
