ORRINGTON, ME - Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Alan Baker Boat Landing in Orrington. The facility is being named in honor of longtime Orrington resident Alan Baker, a distinguished journalist, community leader, and former state legislator.
Baker led the Ellsworth American, one of Maine's oldest newspapers, and founded the Mount Desert Islander. He also served in the Maine House of Representatives and on numerous community boards in Orrington, where he was named Citizen of the Year in 2017. In recognition of his longstanding support for Maine's coastal and island communities, he has also received the Sunbeam Award from the Maine Seacoast Mission.
"Alan Baker is a dear friend and a remarkable Mainer who has dedicated his life to serving others. From his distinguished career in journalism to his many contributions as a community leader and public servant, Alan has demonstrated the importance of civic engagement and service," said Senator Collins. "I commend the Town of Orrington and the Greenfield Environmental Trust Group for their partnership on this important project, which will expand recreational and emergency access to the Penobscot River. I can think of no better tribute to Alan than a facility that will benefit so many people for generations to come."
The new boat landing will provide recreational and emergency responder access to the Penobscot River throughout the tidal cycle, with additional planned amenities including picnic areas, hiking trails, and campsites.
