A Century of Soccer at SJSU

For nearly 100 years, San José State University has shared a deep connection with the game of soccer. From hosting the first iteration of the San José Earthquakes to serving as the base camp for the Paraguay National Team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, SJSU has played an integral part in growing The Beautiful Game in the Bay Area.

Spartan Stadium has often found itself taking center stage in the soccer world, hosting international and professional matches for both men and women. San José State University's athletic facilities have also served as a training site for some of the sport's premier clubs.

  • SJSU served as a Base Camp for the Honduras National Team in 2017 during their World Cup qualifying run and for Jamaica as they prepared for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2017.
  • San Jose State's connection to soccer in the United States dates back to 1927, when the first men's university team took the pitch.
  • San Jose State's Spartan Stadium served as the site for the draw for the historic 1999 Women's World Cup and served as the site for several group stage matches during that Tournament.
  • CEFCU (then-Spartan) Stadium was the home field for the San Jose Earthquakes from 1974 to 1988 and again when the San Jose Clash (which would be renamed Earthquakes) joined Major League Soccer in 1996 through 2005. Spartan Stadium also served as the home field for the San Jose CyberRays of the professional Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) from 2000-2003.
