Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on President Trump’s Meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement on the Israeli Prime Minister's meeting at the White House:

"I am pleased that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has accepted President Trump's proposal to finally end the conflict in Gaza and begin the long road to peace and recovery. This announcement is long overdue and comes after Prime Minister Netanyahu has needlessly prolonged this war and caused enormous suffering by denying Gazans badly needed humanitarian assistance. As we approach the two-year anniversary of the horrific attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7th, it is clear that Israel cannot bring home its hostages nor increase its long-term security by continuing large-scale military operations in Gaza. As families of the hostages have long called for, these operations must end. I call on Hamas to accept, and Israel to faithfully implement, the proposal laid out by the United States.

"The elements of this plan provide a meaningful path to restore regional peace and stability, ensure hostages return to their families and set the groundwork for a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live with dignity and security."
