President Trump's Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission, led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., released the Make Our Children Healthy Again strategic report on Sept. 9.
A previous assessment identified potential drivers of childhood chronic disease as poor diet, chemical exposure, lack of physical activity and chronic stress, and overmedicalization. The strategy will employ research, realign incentives, leverage private sector collaboration, and increase public awareness to tackle these issues.
The report proposes some strategies involving hospitals. The National Institutes of Health will strengthen preexisting clinical trial networks through engagement with large public and private hospitals.
The report also asks the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to review and update guidance and regulations on providing high-quality and healthy food service in hospitals. In addition, it calls on these agencies to encourage transparency of nutritional content for patients. Further, the Departments of Health and Human Services, the Treasury, and Labor will implement the president's executive order on price transparency.
