More women than ever are getting connected to life-saving breast cancer screenings through the Wisconsin Well Woman Program (WWWP). In 2024, Public Health Madison & Dane County enrolled 970 clients, representing a 20% increase in enrollments in the last five years.
"As this need grows, so do we. In recent years, we have expanded our team, including bringing in several bilingual staff members, to help meet the demands in our community," said Dawn Henslee, Program Coordinator for Public Health's Well Woman Program.
There is a 1 in 8 chance a woman in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In Dane County, roughly 425 women receive a breast cancer diagnosis each year. WWWP connects eligible women with free breast exams, mammograms, and other diagnostic tests. Clients may be eligible if they have no insurance, or insurance with a high deductible and income that is at or below 250% of Federal Poverty Guidelines.
Women who learn they have breast cancer may also be eligible for Wisconsin Well Woman Medicaid, which covers treatment costs for breast cancer.
"Early detection is crucial. When breast cancer is caught in its early stages, it is highly treatable. That's why access to routine screenings is one of our most powerful tools to help save lives. We want women to know that cost should never be a barrier to these critical tests," said Henslee.
A member shared this about their experience with the program, "I first learned of the Wisconsin Well Woman Program when diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in November of 2023; it was a lifesaver for me. The coverage has been comprehensive, and the support has been above and beyond any expectation."
Program staff at Public Health can answer questions about breast cancer, program eligibility, and can help make an appointment for a free screening.
Women who qualify can call 608-242-6385 or 608-242-6235 (Spanish) to enroll in the Wisconsin Well Woman Program or email the team directly. Women who live outside Dane and Rock Counties should call 1-800-722-2295 or go online to enroll.
