Deputy Minister of Defence Leads Civil-Military Coordination Meeting in Mullaitivu

In a decisive step toward resolving long standing land issues and advancing regional development, the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), chaired a high level Civil-Military Coordination Meeting at the Mullaitivu Divisional Secretariat yesterday (31 Jul).

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Governor of the Northern Province, Mr. Nagalingam Vethanayahan, the Chairman of Mannar District Coordination Committee and Deputy Minister of Co-operative Development, Mr. Upali Samarasinghe, and Vanni District Parliamentarian, Dr. Sellaththampy Thilakanathan, along with senior government officials.

The discussions centered on land related concerns in Keppapilavu area, where lands are currently used by the Sri Lanka Army, and Vadduvakkal area, where lands are used by the Sri Lanka Navy. The Deputy Minister emphasized that lasting regional stability hinges on striking a careful balance between safeguarding national security imperatives and addressing outstanding land grievances, whether related to state owned or privately held properties.

Following comprehensive briefings from government officials and Security Force Commanders, the Deputy Minister provided guidance on adopting a coordinated, practical, and people centric approach to resolve these issues without compromising national security interests. He also underscored the vital role of the security forces in emergency response, natural disaster relief, and community service initiatives, noting that security forces presence is not only a guarantee of safety but also a source of strength and solidarity for local communities.

Reaffirming the Government's commitment to transparency, reconciliation, and sustainable development, both the Deputy Ministers directed all relevant authorities to work collaboratively in identifying practical and sustainable solutions to the matters discussed.

A defining moment of the meeting was the opportunity afforded to local residents to voice their concerns directly to the Deputy Minister of Defence in a cordial and open atmosphere. Many participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to discuss long standing grievances without hesitation or interference, and left the meeting with renewed hope for the resolution of their issues.

The meeting was also attended by the Security Forces Commanders of the Sri Lanka Army and Navy, senior officials of the Ministry of Defence, the District Secretaries, officials from relevant government institutions, and a large number of local residents.
