October is Fire Prevention Month “Charge into Fire Safety™” with the Alexandria Fire Department

October is Fire Prevention Month, and the Alexandria Fire Department invites you to join us in raising awareness about how to keep your family and community safe from fire.

Each year, Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of October 9 in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This year's campaign, "Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home," runs from October 5 to 11, and focuses on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries.

Tips for Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

From e-bikes and scooters to phones and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. Used properly, they're safe - but if damaged or misused, they can cause fires or even explosions. Here are some tips for preventing lithium-ion battery fires:

  • Always use the charger that came with the device.
  • Charge lithium-ion batteries on a flat, hard surface, never on beds, couches, or near flammable items.
  • Unplug the device once it's fully charged; don't leave items charging overnight.
  • Keep batteries at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
  • Stop using batteries that are hot, swollen, or smell bad. Dispose of the batteries properly at an approved recycling site

Review Your Fire Safety This October

AFD encourages every household to take time this month to:

  • Review your home's fire escape plan.
  • Test smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed.
  • Learn how to charge and store lithium-ion batteries safely.
  • Talk with children and family members about what to do in case of a fire.

Together, we can make a difference, one safe home at a time.
