Hoyer Statement on Last Day of Service for Federal Employees in the Deferred Resignation Program

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement regarding the last day of service for federal employees who took the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP):

"Today is the last day of work for 154,000 patriots -- including VA medical practitioners, meat inspectors, researchers, intelligence and national security experts, first responders and firefighters - all federal workers who have served their neighbors and country with distinction.

"Only eight days into this Administration, Elon Musk and DOGE made a deceptive, opaque, and unauthorized offer to all 2.4 million federal workers. This was a brazen attempt to decimate the federal workforce and the vital services our government provides. As Republicans drive the nation towards a manufactured government shutdown that will further disrupt vital services and force federal employees to be furloughed or work without pay, those who took the offer during that fateful time are now departing federal service. For months, these workers have been paid not to work, paid to not do their jobs. It is inconceivable to think that reducing 'waste, fraud, and abuse,' is best achieved by spending taxpayer dollars in this manner.

"We thank federal employees for their service to country and to the American people. They have faced tireless assaults on their character and careers from Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Russell Vought, and for many, this chapter of service is ending prematurely. May we never forget their commitment to our country and never cease the fight to protect our federal workers."
