PRESS STATEMENT 069

Nicaragua: Statement by the High Representative on behalf of the EU

The European Union continues to monitor closely the evolution of the political situation and severe deterioration of fundamental rights in Nicaragua
Yesterday
The European Union recalls its position condemning the systemic repression by Nicaraguan authorities and repeated calling for the liberation of all political prisoners; the full return to the rule of law and return of international human rights organisations; dialogue between the regime and the opposition, in particular to agree on electoral reforms with a view to support a democratic, peaceful and negotiated solution to the ongoing political crisis. We call on the authorities to conduct elections and ensure that these are take place as initially planned and are held in a transparent, inclusive and credible manner, in line with international standards.

The European Union will continue to support the people of Nicaragua in their legitimate aspiration for democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The European Union remains open to political dialogue with Nicaragua, through the appropriate diplomatic channels, conducted in a respectful manner and in cooperation with regional actors.
