FedEx Japan Employees Revitalize Care Home Playground in Kanagawa Prefecture

TOKYO, Japan, April 20, 2026 - Federal Express Corporation, one of the world's largest express transportation companies, has enhanced the outdoor play space at Kodomo no Sono, a children's home in Chigasaki, Kanagawa. FedEx employees joined forces with Habitat for Humanity to provide hands-on support and help create a more welcoming and active environment for the children.

In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, FedEx volunteers took part in a half-day program, laying wood chips, painting newly installed play equipment, and preparing garden beds and planting seeds. These improvements make the outdoor area more enjoyable and accessible, offering a space where children can play with friends and interact with local community members during facility events.

"The playground at the care home is a vital space that supports children's physical, mental, and emotional development," said Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan. "The new area will draw more people, creating more opportunities for interaction that help children build confidence and strengthen their social skills. It's truly meaningful to see our team come together and dedicate their time and effort to create environments where children can grow and thrive."

Children living in care homes may sometimes have experiences that make them feel set apart from others. This activity also supports their emotional well-being. When children see volunteers showing up for them, it sends a powerful message of support, care, and acceptance.

Approximately 40 children aged 2 to 18 live at Kodomo no Sono. Many come from difficult family situations, including strained parent-child relationships. In Japan, about 23,000 children live in care homes due to various circumstances, highlighting the important role these facilities play in supporting vulnerable youth [1].

This initiative is part of the FedEx Cares, the company's global community engagement program.
