TCEQ Announces Steven Schar as Interim Executive Director
AUSTIN - The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has announced Steven Schar as interim executive director effective October 2, 2026. Schar will serve as interim executive director replacing Kelly Keel who vacated her position October 1.
Schar has served as Deputy Executive Director since December 2023, following roles as Interim Deputy Executive Director and Chief of Staff. Before joining TCEQ, he was a policy advisor for Governor Greg Abbott and spent 12 years in the Texas House of Representatives, including as a senior advisor and committee director.
