City mourning the loss of legendary MVHS Coach, City’s Hometown Hero

The Mission Viejo community is mourning the loss of Hall of Fame high school football coach and the City's 2017 Hometown Hero Bob Johnson who died Wednesday at the age of 80 after a long fight with Alzheimer's disease.

Coach Johnson cemented a storied career in the community while leaving an indelible mark on Mission Viejo. He touched the lives of countless athletes, students and families as a dedicated high school football coach, mentor and friend - who had more wins than any high school or community college coach in Orange County football history.

In 1999, Coach Johnson began coaching the Mission Viejo High School Diablos and led the team to two extensive winning streaks - 41 and 39 games, the second- and third-longest streaks in Orange County football history.

For his vast contributions, the City proclaimed him a Hometown Hero in 2017. Coach Johnson retired after a five-decade coaching career, leaving behind a rich South County legacy of success, determination and inspiration.

He was gracious to take part in numerous MVTV interviews including this one in 2018.

The City is grateful for the incredible footprint Coach Johnson left on this community and extends its condolences to his family and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
