SEMO Music Programs Earn National Reaccreditation

NASM is the specialized accrediting body for collegiate music programs in the United States. The comprehensive review, conducted every 10 years, evaluates curriculum, faculty qualifications, student learning, facilities, resources and overall program quality. The Commission also commended the Department of Music for its thorough response throughout the review process.

"Students want to know they're choosing a quality program," said Dr. Nicholas Kenney, chair of the Department of Music and professor of horn. "This reaccreditation is an independent confirmation that we are that program. It gives students and their families confidence that they're earning a degree from a program that meets national expectations."

The reaccreditation process spanned several years and included a comprehensive self-study, assessment of student learning outcomes, curriculum review, documentation of program effectiveness and an on-site evaluation by a team of peer reviewers from other NASM-accredited institutions.

During the campus visit, reviewers met with faculty, students, administrators and staff, observed classes and rehearsals, and evaluated facilities, academic processes and student learning experiences.

Reaccreditation provides assurance to current and prospective students that SEMO's music programs meet rigorous national standards. It also supports the continued recognition and value of graduates' degrees while demonstrating the University's commitment to continuous improvement.

Students in the Department of Music develop their talents through individualized instruction, ensemble performance, teaching experiences and professional mentorship while preparing for careers in performance, music education, composition, conducting and other areas of the music profession.
