Governor says Republicans in Congress caving to Trump on erratic tariffs and reckless trade wars are leaving Wisconsin farmers and producers behind
MADISON - Gov. Tony Evers today blasted President Donald J. Trump and Republicans for starting a trade war with Canada, Wisconsin's largest export partner, leaving America's Dairyland in the lurch. The governor today pointedly called out Republicans in Congress-including Republican members of Wisconsin's own Congressional delegation-for caving to Trump on his erratic tariffs and reckless trade wars, leaving Wisconsin farmers and producers behind. In 2025, Canada was Wisconsin's largest export partner, with exports to the country valued at over $7.5 billion.

Trade talks between the Trump Administration and Canada collapsed over the weekend, the latest escalation in President Trump's ongoing trade spars with several countries and on-again-off-again tariffs. Late last week, President Trump also announced he will be allowing foreign beef imports, drawing ire from American ranchers. The U.S. Cattlemen's Association, representing more than 175,000 cattle producers and feeders, excoriated the Trump Administration: "You don't put America first by putting U.S. cattle producers last," USCA President Justin Tupper said.

The governor today made a point of calling out Congressional Republicans, including Republican members of Wisconsin's congressional delegation who also represent key portions of Wisconsin's rural areas and farming communities, for enabling President Trump's erratic tariffs and trade wars by repeatedly doing nothing as President Trump unilaterally attempted to implement illegal tariffs and intentionally blocking efforts in Congress aimed at ending the tariffs.

A recently released report found that, as of June 30, 2026, the average American household has spent about $2,072 more on gas, electricity, and tariff-affected goods since President Trump took office for his second term and Republicans secured control of the U.S. Congress. That total increases to $3,569 for a typical household if they receive health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace. According to the report, in Wisconsin, households have paid roughly $2,035 and $3,548 more during this time period, respectively, with costs only expected to increase during the remainder of the year.

  • U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil (WI-01);
  • U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden (WI-03);
  • U.S. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05);
  • U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman (WI-06);
  • U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany (WI-07); and
  • U.S. Rep. Tony Wied (WI-08).

Gov. Evers today released the following statement:

"Time and time again, President Trump and Republicans are causing costs to go up and making life even harder for ranchers, farmers, and producers across America, including here in America's Dairyland-and where in the hell are Republicans in Congress?

"Wisconsin's farmers and producers, working families, seniors, and veterans are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, and now, many are having to go without healthcare coverage because Republicans made that more expensive, too.

"Republicans are leaving America's Dairyland and our farmers and producers behind. All Wisconsinites have to show for President Trump and Republicans taking over Congress is having to spend thousands more of their hard-earned paychecks on gas, electricity, healthcare, and other household goods we depend on every day.

"It's reckless and ridiculous-and this chaos should've ended a long time ago, but Republicans in Congress said no. Disgraceful."
