In 2026, the United States celebrates its semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Grand Rapids is among the many communities across the country celebrating the milestone, Grand Valley is playing a key role.
GR A250 is a celebration of the 250-year anniversary as well as the 175th anniversary of the City of Grand Rapids. The celebration runs from January through Independence Day.
GVSU President Philomena V. Mantella is helping direct GR A250 as part of its steering committee.
"This is an opportunity to reflect on our history and heritage as Americans and as Michiganders as well as envision the future we want for our communities for generations to come," Mantella said.
"GR A250 is guided by people, purpose and progress. Grand Valley is proud to take part in this celebration and bring these principles forward in meaningful ways."
Grand Valley joins the celebration: Art, basketball and more
Grand Valley is leading numerous events coordinated with GR A250. Here are some of the events offered by GVSU:
From January 5 through June 27, the GVSU Art Museum features an exhibit titled "Becoming America: Our Past, Present and Future at 250." The exhibit is located in Lake Ontario Hall's Wall Gallery on the Valley Campus.
The exhibition explores the "triumphs, struggles and transformations that have shaped the American experience" through a variety of works. The art on display will highlight America's founding, its indigenous roots, iconic landscapes and the cultural evolution of the country.
On January 15, GVSU men's and women's basketball takes on Davenport University at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The court will feature an icon with the words "One City, One Team, One Dream."
On February 20 and 21, GVSU is hosting its "Roger That!" conference . The event's theme this year is space and time. Jeanette J. Epps, retired astronaut and current aerospace engineer is set to be the keynote speaker.
