NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (September 14, 2025) - The New Brunswick Train Station is getting a modern makeover while preserving its historical charm. Work is to begin this fall on a multi-phase, $70 million revitalization, a joint effort between NJ Transit and Middlesex County.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2028. The project will start with sidewalk and exterior upgrades along Easton Avenue and Albany Street. Then, crews will build a new ticketing center with an elevator and waiting areas and will significantly renovate the station building and its platforms.
The project will address existing issues, including a leaky roof, a basement that floods and an outdated sprinkler system. The platforms will also be extended to accommodate trains with up to 12 cars, with the goal of serving the more than 4,000 daily travelers and anticipating growth from new developments, such as the Health and Life Science Exchange (HELIX) and Rutgers University's expansion.
The station's iconic orange-brick facade will remain, blending modern amenities with historical elements.
"For more than a century, the New Brunswick Train Station has been the front door to our City," said Mayor Jim Cahill. "With this investment and modernization, we're ensuring it remains a welcoming, accessible, and forward-looking gateway that supports the growth of New Brunswick, Middlesex County, and the entire region for generations to come."
