Governor Hochul Announces Completion of $31.5 Million in Pavement Renewal Projects Along Key Long Island Roadways

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that major construction is complete on a pair of highway renewal projects to enhance public safety and provide smoother rides along several key roads on Long Island. The projects, which totaled a $31.5 million investment in Long Island's transportation network, resurfaced nearly 100 lanes miles of roadway, upgraded curb ramps and made other improvements to such vital roadways as State Route 25, the Sunrise Highway (State Route 27) Service Roads in Suffolk County, and State Route 24 (Hempstead Turnpike/Fulton Avenue) and State Route 102 (Front Street) in and around the Village of Hempstead. The improved roadways all serve vital travel corridors, providing access to hundreds of local and national retailers and carrying thousands of commuters and visitors each day.

"Long Island's roads are essential to our economy and quality of life, connecting families to their communities, workers to their jobs and visitors to destinations," Governor Hochul said. "These projects exemplify our commitment to making the infrastructure and public safety investments needed to keep New Yorkers moving and ensure our transportation system meets the needs of our communities."

Thanks to Governor Hochul's investment of $600 million in additional funding for paving this year, the New York State Department of Transportation is undertaking more than 180 additional paving projects across the state. These projects, which total almost 2,150 lane miles, are in addition to the paving initiatives already scheduled as part of NYSDOT's core program. Taken together, they represent the most ambitious annual road resurfacing agenda ever put forward by NYSDOT.

Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, "Thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul's leadership, New York State continues to deliver projects that are restoring our transportation infrastructure and improving public safety across Long Island. The completion of these projects reflects the Governor's commitment to delivering on what people need - taking care of our roads by delivering high-quality infrastructure enhancements for Long Island motorists and pedestrians."

Recently completed work included a $17.7 million project that renewed 61 lane miles and upgraded more than 180 curb ramps along key sections of State Route 25 and the Sunrise Highway (State Route 27) Service Roads in Suffolk County. State Route 25 is a vital east-west corridor serving Long Island's North Shore communities, including Riverhead's farming communities and tourism destinations. State Route 27 and its Service Roads provide a critical connection along the South Shore.

Major construction began this spring and was completed at the following locations:

• State Route 25 (Middle Country Road) from State Route 25A to Splish Splash Drive in the Town of Riverhead;
• Sunrise Highway South Service Road from Montauk Highway (County Road 85) to Nicolls Road (County Road 97) in the Town of Islip; and
• Sunrise Highway North Service Road from Nicolls Road (County Road 97) to Pond Road in the Town of Islip.

The work on Sunrise Highway also included pavement resurfacing in both directions of the Sunrise Highway Service Road between Manor Lane and Brentwood Road in the Town of Islip, which was completed last fall.

Crews milled and resurfaced aging asphalt, upgraded more than 180 curb ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and installed new highly reflective pavement markings to enhance safety and provide better visibility. Traffic signals along the Service Roads were also upgraded with the latest technology to support improved mobility, while storm drains were cleaned to increase their flood mitigation capabilities along the corridors.

Also completed was a $13.8 million project that repaved approximately 36 lane miles of State Route 24 (Hempstead Turnpike/Fulton Avenue) and State Route 102 (Front Street) and made other improvements - including new turning lanes, upgraded traffic signals and curb ramps - to improve traffic flow and enhance public safety for motorists and pedestrians in this heavily traveled area of Nassau County. Work took place at the following locations:

• State Route 24 between Munson Avenue and North Franklin Street,
• State Route 24 between Hendrickson Avenue and the Meadowbrook State Parkway, and
• State Route 102 from William Street eastward to State Route 24.

To further enhance public safety and accessibility, pedestrian signals, sidewalks and crosswalks were upgraded at the intersection of State Route 24 and Hempstead Avenue. New left turn lanes were also installed along State Route 102 toward William Street and Nassau Place; and existing travel lanes on State Route 102 between the two streets have now been realigned to calm traffic, reduce congestion and enhance safety.

These projects are part of New York State's $34.5 billion DOT Capital Plan, which is making historic investments in roads and bridges across Long Island and throughout the state to strengthen infrastructure, support economic growth and enhance the quality of life for New Yorkers.

Senator Charles Schumer said, "Federal funding delivered critical upgrades to 100 miles of Long Island roadway, including State Routes 24, 25, 27 and 102, making travel safer and more efficient for New Yorkers. When I passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, it was to modernize local infrastructure, boost jobs and the economy, and make vital improvements in communities across New York - and that's exactly what these projects have done. I thank Governor Hochul for her commitment to strengthening our state's infrastructure."

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said, "Investing in projects that improve roadway safety is vital to preventing future traffic tragedies in our communities. I'm proud to have fought to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that is supporting this investment to modernize Long Island's roadways, and I will keep fighting to make our roads safer for the residents, businesses, and commuters who rely on them every day."

State Senator Monica R. Martinez said, "Traveling on Long Island can sometimes get a little bumpy. Investments in our roads, however, are helping reduce wear and tear on vehicles while making travel safer for the motorists who need to move throughout our region each day.
