Caltrans Continues To Implement an Emergency Lane Closure on Eastbound I-580 Richmond San Rafael Bridge Following Recent Incident at The Scofield Avenue Undercrossing

Published: Mar 26, 2026

Contra Costa County & Marin County - Caltrans has closed lane #1 (far left lane) on eastbound I-580 from Pier 59 to the Stenmark Drive on ramp in Richmond after a vehicle damaged a steel support under the Scofield Avenue undercrossing. The closure will continue until temporary support is built, expected by the week of March 31, 2026, to prevent further bridge damage. Please note a reduced speed limit of 40 MPH.

This lane closure may lead to longer commute times and increased traffic congestion for drivers traveling from Marin County to Contra Costa County.

Caltrans would like to remind drivers that far right lane remains a "break down lane" and the "Left lane closed ahead" is referring to the lane closure from Pier 59 to the Stenmark Drive on ramp No work is visible on I-580.

Closures Details:

  • Eastbound I-580 Pier 59 to Stenmark Drive on-ramp: Lane #1
  • CLOSED tentatively until 3/31. (Subject to change)

We appreciate the public's patience as we work to ensure the integrity of the roadway. The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge remains safe and open for travel despite ongoing lane closures.
