The Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis yesterday, Friday 05 June 2026, attended the Celebration of the 53rd Anniversary of the May 1973 Naval Mutiny at the Hellenic Naval Academy, as representative of the Hellenic Government.

The Deputy Minister was greeted by the Chief HNDGS, General Dimitrios Choupis, the Chief HNGS, Vice Admiral Dimitrios - Eleftherios Kataras HN, and the Hellenic Naval Academy Commandant, Rear Admiral Ioannis Retsas HN.

During the celebration, Mr. Davakis viewed a short anniversary film and the Hellenic Navy Band's musical programme.

Mr. Davakis, following the end of the celebration, stated the following:

"Today we are honouring an important moment of modern Greek history, an act of bravery, responsibility and democratic consciousness on behalf of the Hellenic Navy's personnel.

Their legacy continues to inspire the younger generations of the Hellenic Navy's personnel, and remind that service to the country is indissolubly connected to the feeling of responsibility, dedication to duty, and respect to the State's institutions.

The anniversary of the Naval Mutiny reminds us that democracy, liberty and institutional legitimacy are values which require constant dedication, responsibility and vigilance on behalf of us all".
