The Resilient AI Challenge was launched by UNESCO, the Governments of France and India, in cooperation with the Sustainable AI Coalition. Researchers, companies, start-ups and innovators worldwide have been invited to develop compressed versions of leading open-source or open-weight AI models, developed by AI partners Google, Mistral and Sarvam AI. Participants competed to achieve the best balance between model accuracy and energy efficiency across three real-world AI applications.
The Challenge builds on UNESCO's research with the University College London (UCL), Smarter, Smaller, Stronger: Resource-efficient AI and the Future of Digital Transformation , which demonstrates that carefully designed AI systems can substantially reduce energy consumption without compromising performance. The Challenge translates these research findings into practical innovation by encouraging solutions that make AI more sustainable, accessible and resilient.
Over 149 participants from 30 countries have signed up for the Resilient AI Challenge, demonstrating great interest for the topic. Throughout the Challenge, dedicated sessions were organized between the participants and the model developers to facilitate technical dialogues with teams from Google, Mistral and Sarvam AI.
