MillerKnoll Introduces Project Level Carbon Calculator to Support Carbon Reporting in Furniture Installations
MillerKnoll recently released a new tool that enables designers, clients, and sustainability teams to calculate the embodied carbon of entire MillerKnoll furniture installations in a matter of minutes. The calculator, available exclusively through Ecomedes¹, represents a new approach to project-level carbon reporting for the contract furniture industry.
Embodied carbon, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the extraction, manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of materials, is increasingly central to sustainability reporting and decarbonization strategies across the built environment. Until now, assessing the carbon footprint of a full furniture project typically required manual data compilation, inconsistent methodologies, and significant time investments.
The new calculator streamlines that process by:
"With embodied carbon becoming a major focal point in the built environment, our goal was to give project teams a faster, more consistent way to understand their impacts, facilitating carbon reduction efforts," said Gabe Wing, Vice President of Sustainability. "This tool significantly reduces manual work and supports better decision-making at the earliest stages of design."
The calculator was developed to help advance industry-wide progress in reducing carbon emissions associated with the built environment. While the tool is currently proprietary to MillerKnoll customers, Ecomedes has indicated it expects to expand access of the tool to all their users more broadly later this year, supporting greater transparency and simplified carbon reporting across the industry.
