Cincinnati, OH - Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH-01) released the following statement after Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti has officially ended.
President Trump is about to deport tens of thousands of Haitians. It's cruel, wrong, and terrible for our country.
Starting this weekend, Haitian families are being told to report to ICE facilities, and we don't know what will happen next.
What we do know is who these families are. They have dignity. They work really hard. They've started businesses, filled manufacturing job shortages, and many of them are home health workers taking care of our families.
The violence in Haiti has been terrifying for years, and it's only gotten worse. Sending them back would be inhumane. They'd have a difficult time finding housing, healthcare, jobs. Many will starve. Some may not survive.
That's why the House forced a vote and passed an extension of TPS for Haitian families.
The Senate is still in session for another week and must act before it's too late.
Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity - Americans, Haitians, everyone. We can't lose sight of our shared humanity.
