Southern University and A&M College mourns the passing of former Chancellor James L. Llorens, a dedicated leader and champion of higher education and community. He died on Tuesday, April 21.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Llorens' family, friends, former colleagues and students, and all who were touched by his life and service.
A native of Alexandria, Louisiana, Dr. Llorens served Southern University with distinction, including his tenure as Chancellor of Southern University and A&M College from 2011 to 2014, guiding the campus with a steady commitment to academic excellence, student success, and institutional advancement. Prior to being appointed chancellor by the Southern University System Board, he served Southern in various positions, including dean of graduate studies, chair of the political science department, and associate professor of public administration on the Baton Rouge campus.
Dr. Llorens also served the Baton Rouge community in multiple city-parish government roles, including human resources director during the administration of Mayor-President Pat Screen, assistant chief administration officer during Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden's administration, and interim chief administration officer during Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome's administration.
Dr. Llorens' example of dedication and exemplary service will continue impact Southern University and our overall community.
