DALLAS - Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) will honor the life, service, and sacrifice of DART Police Officer Brent Thompson during a memorial ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the July 7, 2016, ambush and Officer Thompson's End of Watch.
The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at DART Police Headquarters, 2111 South Corinth Street Road, Dallas, Texas 75203. Family members, fellow law enforcement officers, DART Board members, employees, elected officials, and community leaders will gather to remember Officer Thompson's extraordinary service and lasting legacy.
Officer Thompson was killed in the line of duty on July 7, 2016, while protecting the public during the downtown Dallas shooting that claimed the lives of five law enforcement officers. He remains the only DART Police officer to make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
"Officer Brent Thompson embodied the very best of public service. His courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to protecting others continue to inspire every member of the DART Police Department," said DART Police Chief Charles Cato. "As we mark ten years since that tragic day, we honor Brent's legacy while also remembering the resilience that followed. In one of North Texas' darkest moments, we witnessed neighbors stand beside neighbors, first responders answer the call without hesitation, and communities come together in support of one another. That spirit of unity remains one of the most enduring legacies of July 7."
The memorial will provide an opportunity to reflect on Officer Thompson's sacrifice, recognize the service of all who wear the badge, and reaffirm DART's commitment to protecting the communities it serves. While the day is one of solemn remembrance, it is also a reminder that courage, compassion, and unity are stronger than hate.
