Changes to traffic pattern at Landfill’s Compost Facility

Customers visiting the Compost Facility at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will need to follow a new traffic pattern while construction continues at the facility.

To accommodate the final phase of paving, the new traffic patterns will impact customers disposing of yard waste and food waste and for customers picking up wood chips. Please follow directions from the scalehouse staff and the updated signage on site.

The expansion will allow the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center to receive and process more yard waste and food waste from Johnson County, Kalona, and Riverside, which will in turn increase the amount of compost available.

This project was funded in part from landfill funds, a $4 million grant via the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling program, and from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Environmental Management System program.

The Compost Facility currently does not have compost available; an announcement will be made when compost is available for purchase.
