Mount Sinai's Emma Guttman, MD, PhD, Elected to the Association of American Physicians

Emma Guttman, MD, PhD, Waldman Professor and System Chair of the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has been elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP). The prestigious honor recognizes top physician-scientists who exhibit excellence in the pursuit of medical knowledge and the advancement of basic or translational science through experimentation and discovery and their application to clinical medicine.

Dr. Guttman was formally introduced as a new member on Saturday, April 18, during a special dinner at the AAP's annual meeting, held Friday, April 17, through Sunday, April 19, in Chicago.

"I am deeply honored to be elected to the Association of American Physicians, and I'm grateful to my colleagues, collaborators, and trainees. At Mount Sinai, we are building an integrated research and clinical ecosystem focused on redefining the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases," said Dr. Guttman. "Together, we are advancing a broad portfolio of translational and clinical initiatives that are transforming how we treat inflammatory skin diseases, from pioneering new therapeutic targets to accelerating the development of next-generation treatments. We are committed to expanding treatment options and improving the lives of patients by bringing them meaningful, science-driven advances to care."

Among many accomplishments, Dr. Guttman's research has fundamentally reshaped the understanding and treatment of atopic dermatitis. Her translational has directly informed clinical trials and subsequent U.S. Food and Drug Administration approvals of new treatments. More recently, her research has expanded to additional conditions, including alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, and keloids, where she has identified new drug targets driving the development of next-generation therapies.

Founded in 1885, the Association of American Physicians is one of the nation's oldest and most respected honorary medical societies. Election is limited to physicians with outstanding credentials in biomedical research and is considered one of the highest honors in academic medicine. The AAP includes approximately 1,200 active members and 700 emeritus and honorary members from the United States, Canada, and around the globe.
