The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance is reaffirming its role as a regional economic growth organization committed to strengthening businesses, communities and opportunities throughout the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area and the broader region.
Guided by its mission - to drive economic, workforce and population growth strategies, and to help business succeed - the Economic Alliance brings together economic development, chamber, community development and trade functions under one managing-enterprise structure. Together, these entities advance the shared vision to be the top economic growth region in the country.
The City of Cedar Rapids has recently increased its investment in the Economic Alliance, reflecting a meaningful commitment to the continued competitiveness, vitality and growth of Iowa's second-largest city. That investment will help support work that attracts, retains and expands businesses; develops workforce and talent strategies; strengthens key districts and quality-of-place initiatives; and creates opportunities for businesses to connect with global markets.
"Cedar Rapids' increased investment is an important vote of confidence in the work required to compete for businesses, talent and investment," said Juliet Abdel, President and CEO of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance. "Cedar Rapids is vital to the strength of our regional economy, and its success is deeply connected to the success of communities, employers and residents throughout the broader region, including Linn, Benton, Jones, Iowa, Johnson, Cedar and Washington counties."
While the Economic Alliance is proud to serve as a strategic partner to Cedar Rapids, its work and impact are regional by design. The organization also receives investment and support from communities and regional partners, including Linn and Iowa Counties, Ely, Marion, Hiawatha, Mount Vernon, Fairfax and numerous others.
"Regional economic growth is not a zero-sum proposition," said James Klein, Chair of the Economic Alliance Board of Directors. "Our role is to connect those opportunities and help the region compete together."
Funding from the City will strengthen the business environment.
"The City's investment is not simply about supporting chamber programming; it is an investment in the business environment," Abdel said. "Our businesses need advocacy, connections and resources that help them grow. That is a legitimate economic development function, and it is why the City's investment matters."
She added, "We are strengthening an organization that already brings economic development, chamber, community development and trade resources together to create greater impact across the region."
The Economic Alliance will continue working with Cedar Rapids, regional communities, public-sector partners, businesses and other stakeholders to advance business growth, workforce development, talent and population growth, entrepreneurship, trade and community development. "Together, we are building the conditions for long-term, inclusive and regionwide growth."
