Most of us have applied for a job or a school we really wanted. It can be a stressful process, and what helps is having access to a quiet place to focus and the time to complete job applications, draft admissions essays, or sort out housing logistics. That's not always the case for individuals and families served by Family Promise of Ozaukee County's Portlight shelter, who are navigating these moments while also working toward greater stability.
More than 5,000 people in Wisconsin did not have a permanent place to live in 2024, and 2,000 of them were families. Public spaces like libraries or coffee shops may be available, but they often lack privacy, reliable internet, or a place to work consistently for extended periods. When a family is navigating a housing crisis, each day is already full of urgent needs. Distractions and limited resources can make it even harder.
That's why Oracle is supporting Family Promise with a donation of desktop computer workstations that give their clients a dedicated space to complete job applications, update resumes, apply to schools, and search for permanent housing.
Every individual and family at Portlight receive hands-on support from case managers. While the primary goals are stable employment and permanent housing, Family Promise also helps clients build practical skills for daily life, including budgeting and financial management. The focus is on what comes next after their stay at Portlight: independence, dignity, and opportunity.
"Portlight Shelter is a safe place for people to find their footing before moving into a place of their own," said Mike Cosgrove, CEO, Family Promise Ozaukee County. "These new computers and workstations can help our clients focus on what comes next, supported by our broader programs."
"Access to technology can help remove barriers and open doors, but it's only part of the solution," said Colleen Cassity, vice president of Social Impact, Oracle. "We are pleased to support the holistic approach Family Promise brings to helping individuals and families move toward stability and brighter futures."
Portlight Shelter is part of Family Promise's broader work to prevent homelessness and reduce returns to shelter. Its programs include rent and utility assistance, help locating permanent housing, and connections to community resources.
