Safety Improvements Underway at Gorman and Jackson Streets

A traffic safety project is underway at the intersection of Gorman Street, Jackson Street, and Wolf Village Way near NC State University.

City crews and contractors are installing a concrete median, a channelization island, new ADA-accessible curb ramps, and high-visibility crosswalks to make the intersection safer for everyone.

As part of the project, drivers leaving Jackson Street will only be able to turn right onto Gorman Street. Left turns and through traffic from Jackson Street will no longer be allowed. This change is being made because of a history of crashes caused by drivers leaving Jackson Street and failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

The project also includes new high-visibility crosswalks across Gorman Street, Jackson Street, and Wolf Village Way. City crews installed the crosswalks using thermoplastic pavement markings, a durable material that is heated and bonded to the road surface. Glass beads are added to the markings so they reflect vehicle headlights back toward drivers, making the crosswalks easier to see at night.

These improvements will help create a safer intersection for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers traveling through this busy area near NC State University. Construction is expected to be complete early next week.
