During Kenya's President William Ruto's official visit to Norway this week, Norway and Kenya signed a statement of intent under the Paris Agreement's article 6.
Norway's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Espen Barth Eide, and Kenya's Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Dr Musalia Mudavadi, marked the intention to collaborate on international carbon credits.
'In a turbulent time, it is all the more important to support international climate efforts. Norway and Kenya aim to develop a partnership in which Norway finances emission reductions in Kenya,' said Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.
Article 6 of the Paris Agreement allows countries to voluntarily cooperate on emission reductions that are transferred between countries for use towards emission targets. This is also known as carbon trading.
This type of cooperation makes it possible for both host countries and buyer countries to increase their aspirations by setting more ambitious emission reduction targets and implement more climate policies and measures than they would otherwise have done. This can help accelerate and expand the global green transition and increase private investments in green solutions to achieve the Paris Agreement's temperature target.
