WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a milestone for wildlife and people, the offshore wind project, Revolution Wind, is fully constructed and powering the equivalent of over 350,000 homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
"Revolution Wind is a win for wildlife and people in Rhode Island and Connecticut" said Amber Hewett, senior director of offshore wind energy at the National Wildlife Federation. "Responsibly developed offshore wind projects like Revolution Wind reduce our reliance on dirty and expensive fossil fuels that accelerate the dangerous impacts of climate change. The National Wildlife Federation engaged throughout the permitting process for Revolution Wind and can attest to the strong protections for coastal and marine wildlife at every step of the process from siting to construction to operations."
Revolution Wind is required to implement extensive measures to avoid, minimize, mitigate, and monitor impacts to wildlife throughout project development, construction, and operations. These measures encompass extensive protections for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, including but not limited to: seasonal and time-of-day restrictions on certain activities; to reduce underwater sound from pile driving; vessel speed restrictions; and extensive monitoring and reporting requirements.
In addition, Revolution Wind is required to use compensatory mitigation strategies for federally protected piping plovers and red knots, as well as long-term monitoring programs to better understand potential impacts to wildlife and marine ecosystems.
Revolution Wind has also committed to going above and beyond the legal requirements. Revolution Wind has been exceptionally cooperative and communicative in its engagement with the National Wildlife Federation, participating in collaborative efforts to advance additional voluntary wildlife protections beyond regulatory requirements and to share information to protect species and deploy responsible offshore wind.
Revolution Wind's milestone comes right on the heels of Vineyard Wind, an offshore wind project providing enough electricity to power 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts, reaching full operation last week.
