BTS Updates National Transportation Statistics 6/30/26

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released its monthly update to National Transportation Statistics (NTS), a guide to historical national-level transportation trends.

Each month, BTS updates NTS with transportation statistics from across the following areas:

  • The extent, condition, use, and performance of the physical transportation network and infrastructure;
  • Safety information including accidents, crashes, fatalities, and injuries for each transportation mode and for hazardous materials movement;
  • Transportation's impact on the economy, including gross domestic product, employment by industry and occupation, and transportation-related consumer and Government expenditures; and
  • Transportation's impact on energy use.

This month, the following tables received new data:

  • U.S. Oil and Gas Pipeline Mileage (1-10)
  • Active U.S. Air Carrier and General Aviation Fleet by Type of Aircraft (1-13)
  • Transportation Fatalities by Mode (2-1)
  • Injured Persons by Transportation Mode (2-2)
  • Motor Vehicle Safety Data (2-17)
  • Motor Vehicle Fatalities, Vehicle-Miles, and Associated Rates by Highway Functional System (2-18)
  • Occupant Fatalities by Vehicle Type and Nonoccupant Fatalities (2-19)
  • Occupant and Non-Motorist Fatalities in Crashes by Number of Vehicles and Alcohol Involvement (2-20)
  • Waterborne Transportation Safety and Property Damage Data Related to Vessel Casualties (2-45)
  • Waterborne Transportation Safety Data not Related to Vessel Casualties (2-46)
  • Employment in For-Hire Transportation and Selected Transportation-Related Industries (3-23)
  • Certificated Air Carrier Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-8, 4-8M)
  • Energy Intensity of Passenger Modes (4-20, 4-20M)
  • Annual Wasted Fuel Due to Congestion (4-28)
  • Annual Wasted Fuel Per Person (4-29)
  • Areas in Nonattainment of National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Criteria Pollutants (4-52)
  • U.S. Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Energy Use by Sector (4-53)
  • Leaking Underground Storage Tank Releases and Cleanups (4-55)
  • Highway Noise Barrier Construction (4-56)

NTS is a collection of transportation data first published by BTS in November 1971. NTS has grown to over 200 regularly updated datasets and tables after incorporating materials from other Department of Transportation programs.
