The Garland City Council will accept applications for a new All Abilities Committee from Wednesday, Nov. 12, through Wednesday, Dec. 3. The committee will begin bimonthly meetings in February. Applications are available at GarlandTX.gov.
The All Abilities Committee will advocate for, support and improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities and their families. The committee will advise City Council and City staff on policies, programs and services, identify gaps in accessibility and seek to bring more inclusion within the community. The committee will also raise awareness of the community members, foster understanding and promote collaboration among schools, the City, nonprofits and local businesses.
Potential members may be individuals with disabilities, family members or caregivers, experts and professionals, or community advocates.
The Administrative Services Committee proposed the All Abilities Committee to City Council in August, and the Council approved its creation in its Nov. 3 Work Session. Each City Council member, as well as the Mayor, will appoint one member to the committee.
