Rosaline Meyer '27L is a second-year law student at Washington and Lee and is originally from Sacramento, California. She is an active member of the W&L community, serving as a Law Review staff writer, Vice President of the First-Generation Student Union, Vice President of Events for the Women Law Students Organization, and captain of an LSFL football team. This past summer she worked at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP in their Birmingham, Alabama office. After law school, she looks forward to exploring more of the East Coast with her golden retriever, Cassie.
How did you find/get this position?
I heard great things about Bradley from fellow W&L students, which motivated me to apply through OCI. After interviewing with one of the hiring partners, I was invited to attend a callback interview in Birmingham. Shortly thereafter, I received my offer to join the firm for the summer!
Describe your work experience.
Bradley's framework for the summer program was flexible and allowed me to source projects from practice areas that interested me most. I assisted attorneys from several practice groups, including antitrust, white-collar defense, and general litigation. The attorneys I worked with emphasized hands-on learning by encouraging me to draft court filings and attend client meetings. It was an invaluable opportunity to interact with the law in new ways.
What were some skills you developed this summer?
My experience this summer strengthened my research and writing skills. Writing legal memoranda, drafting court filings, and constantly researching new issues refined the skills that Legal Research and Legal Writing taught me in my 1L year. I also developed great communication skills, which helped with navigating workplace discussions.
What surprised you about the work you did this summer?
I was surprised to discover how much I truly enjoyed the work I was doing! Each project that I worked on was consistently interesting and complex. It was both inspiring and fulfilling to tackle these projects alongside the talented attorneys at Bradley, and I look forward to continuing that work next summer.
What was your favorite aspect of this summer work experience?
I really enjoyed getting to know the other summer associates and attorneys at the firm. The recruiting team at Bradley planned a summer full of fun events that encouraged us all to grow closer. Some of my favorite events included baseball games, progressive dinners, and a trip to the Supreme Court of Alabama.
Has this experience helped you figure out post graduate plans, and if so, how?
This summer exposed me to many different areas of the law, giving me a clearer sense of my professional interests. After only one year of law school, it is hard to know what you might want to spend your future career focusing on. I am still exploring my options, but this summer brought me one step closer to identifying the practice area I want to pursue after graduation.
How do you think this experience will shape the rest of your time at W&L Law?
My summer experience sparked an excitement to explore new areas of the law and make the most of my limited time in law school. I plan to continue taking classes that challenge me academically while remaining actively involved on campus by supporting the organizations I care about.
